Anal glands expression

Two curious dogs

The anal glands maintenance period can vary with each dog or cat. Some of them may need help every few weeks others will be comfortable even once a year.

If your pet struggles to express the glands, they can become blocked, which can make toileting difficult and can potentially lead to infections or abscesses.

To prevent the worst symptoms, monitor them for signs of potent (fishy) odour, discomfort, scooting, licking, biting the hind legs or crying.

You can tackle the issue usually by a combination of the right diet and frequent maintenance.
